Crispy Oven-Fried Yams

by Lorraine Thompson on March 19, 2009

These oven-fried yams were inspired by fellow copywriter Kelly Parkinson of Copylicious.

Kelly saw our recipe for Crispy Oven-Fried Potatoes (made with Idaho potatoes) and asked, “Do you think I could do this with yams/sweet potatoes…”

Yes, indeed—glad to provide tasty nutrition to fuel your next creative burst, Kelly.

Seared with garlicky spices and extra-virgin olive oil, these yam chips are crispy on the edges and chewy in the center. Thanks for the great idea, Kelly!

Crispy Oven-Fried Yams

2 medium-size yams or sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced very thin
3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
Kosher salt, about 1 teaspoon
Ground paprika, about 1 teaspoon
Garlic powder, about 1/2 teaspoon

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Use one tablespoon of oil to grease a cookie sheet.
  3. Slice yams thinly. You must use the sliced yams immediately; they turn brown quickly.
  4. The thinner you slice the yams the crispier the chips.

  5. Arrange yam slices on the cookie sheet.

  6. Drizzle remaining oil over yam slices.

  7. Sprinkle yams with salt and spices.

  8. Bake yams for 15 minutes.
  9. The baked yam slices will look browned before you turn them over.

  10. Slide cookie sheet from oven, turn yam slices over and return sheet to oven. Bake 10-15 more minutes.
  11. The yams are less colorful on their underside. Here's what they look like after they've been turned over and baked—even the extra-brown yams taste yummy.

  12. Remove yams from oven and serve hot with lots of ketchup.

The flavor combination of salty and sweet, the crisp outside and soft inside–It’s the Holy Grail of Snacks!
Now that you’ve optimized this recipe, I can’t wait to try it!
Thank you!
